The Mindfulness Companion

Written by Dr Sarah J Arnold,
Illustrations by Angelea Van Dam.
Published by Michael O'Mara Books Limited, 2016

A Brief Introduction

The Mindfulness Companion was created as a tool for self-care - to enable those who love colouring to do so mindfully, for the betterment of their mental health and well-being. This book will introduce those who use it to the fundamental principles of mindfulness, like gratitude, non-judgement, compassion for the self and others, loving-kindness, curiosity, truly being in the present moment, and so forth, via simple, easy to read exercises based upon these concepts.

Each beautiful illustration is paired with one exercise that the reader can engage with before and/after colouring. The exercises endeavor to assist with the experience of colouring mindfully in the present moment, and teach general mindfulness skills, like breathing mindfully, how to observe our internal experiences without judgement, and how to guide the mind back to the present moment when it wanders.

There is space to write about, and reflect upon, personal thoughts and feelings at various points throughout the book. There are also thought-provoking quotes and phrases that can be used like mantras to inspire and enhance the individual's understanding of what mindfulness is, and how to do it. It is my sincere hope that if you choose to purchase this book, you will find it beneficial and a joy to engage with.

The Mindfulness Companion is available now from various websites, including Amazon and The Guardian Bookshop.

'This being human is a guest house. Every morning is a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor... Welcome and entertain them all. Treat each guest honorably. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.' ◆ Rumi.
