'When I started my work with Sarah it was something I felt I crucially needed at the time. I was locked inside my thoughts and terrified of the power they had. I was in a position where I felt I didn’t have the skills or knowledge to help the problematic anxiety I was experiencing. I hadn’t had the guidance needed growing up to learn how to understand emotions or deal with the difficult thinking that comes with life. I was extremely lucky to have met Sarah as my first and only therapist, who I continue to work with currently out of choice rather than desperation. She has guided me through extremely difficult thinking patterns and mental scripts that were learnt as I grew up. Her ability to give me space and a sense of safety to explore my thinking without fearing it has opened up my world like I could have never thought at the time. 'I started having therapy with Sarah when I was going through some really difficult times and she helped me come to terms with what had happened and process all the feelings I was struggling with. But therapy with Sarah wasn’t just about processing, it was also about learning: about myself, my thoughts, my feelings, what feelings are for and why they happen the way they do. These were all things I had no idea about. Therapy became like training. The point wasn’t to always come back to therapy and ‘rely’ on it; the point was to become literate in my own thoughts, feelings and values – skills I wish I had learned in childhood but very few of us do – so that I no longer needed therapy. In this way, therapy gave me the skills I needed to be the version of myself that I want to be, to understand and healthily engage with my thoughts and feelings, and live a life in accordance with my values.
